he American Section of the Lycée International de St. Germain-en-Laye is seeking a College Counselor to start in August 2010.

Located twenty-five minutes from the Champs Elysées, in the western suburbs of Paris, the American Section is a school within a school: the Lycée International of St. Germain-en-Laye. With more than 700 students K-12, including 60 pupils on average in each upper school class, the US and Canadian faculty of the American Section teach a native-level, American curriculum in both language arts and history; a French faculty provides the remaining 70% of the curriculum, whether it be mathematics, economics, or other disciplines. American Section students are thus bilingual and bicultural when they graduate from twelfth grade, not to mention multilingual and multicultural when they speak languages and come from cultures beyond the United States and France. There are eleven other schools within the school at the Lycée International: British, Danish, Dutch, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish. The high school program for each “section” culminates in a two-year bilingual, bicultural program leading to the French Baccalaureate with the International Option, a well-recognized diploma that allows students to attend selective universities around the world.

Reporting to the Director of the American Section, the College Counselor is responsible for administering all aspects of the university admissions process for upper school students, from tenth grade through twelfth grade. Approximately one third of American Section students seek admission to college in the United States and Canada, one third apply to universities in the United Kingdom, and one third elect to stay in France or attend Anglophone colleges in other European countries.

Necessary qualities include excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral communication skills, and organizational skills, given the multiple deadlines involved in the university application process. Preference will be given to candidates who are familiar with the mission and practices of a college preparatory school, as well as the demands of the university application process in the United States and the United Kingdom. A willingness to teach one upper school class, either in language arts or history, is welcome. It is also desirable that candidates be able to understand and speak French well.

Candidates should send a letter of application explaining the candidate’s strengths and reasons for applying to the College Counselor position, a current CV, and a list of references with phone numbers and email addresses at the earliest possible time, but no later than January 29, 2010, to the Director of the American Section, Mr. Sean Lynch, at director@americansection.org. If an outstanding applicant is identified early in the search process, the American Section of the Lycée International may make an appointment prior to this deadline.
